The Horizon Tries explores the concept of landscape in the semantic field nature - culture - landscape. The exhibition includes new work by Lala Raščić, featuring videos by Fokus Grupa (HR) and Lana Čmajčanin (BiH), complemented by a series of events scheduled through the duration of the show.



Not just another landscape show, The Horizon Tries takes a cue from Simon Schama’s Landscape and Memory: “…the very act of identifying (not to mention photographing) the place presupposes our presence, and along with us all the heavy cultural backpacks we lug with us on the trail,” it asks the question: when we look at landscape do we see culture or nature? The exhibition departs from the life and work of Élisée Reclus, a 19th century anarchist, geographer, and environmentalist who traveled to New Orleans presented in Lala Raščić’s video No Country Other than Liberty (2013). Raščić juxtaposes text by Reclus with enacted scenes and contemporary video footage shot along the industrial landscape of the Louisiana Delta. Croatian artists Fokus Grupa test representation of nature with footage from Croatian national parks and “international English” narration in their video There Aren’t Words For What We Do Or How We Feel So We Have To Make Them Up (2012), while Lana Čmajčanin shows the shifting borders of her native Bosnia and Herzegovina in her animation Geometry of Time(2014). The exhibition also features new pieces by Raščić based on diverse considerations of landscape/nature.

The Horizon Tries collects works that deal with the concept of looking and representing nature in the anthropocene, vertical imaging, physical and visual exploitation, connection of nature and nationalism, the map and the territory, humanity and the earth.
