Good Children Gallery is pleased to announce Emotional Signs, a group
exhibition featuring the works of Duane Dugas, John Barnes, Eve Fowler,
Michael St. John, Sophie T. Lvoff, Andrew Mister, Dmitri Obergfell, Devon Oder,
and Stephen Collier.
This exhibition explores images, objects, and sounds that hold power and contain
different levels of emotional language and/or baggage. Whether it’s personal,
collective, historical, political, public or private, the everyday things we encounter
in our lives may trigger sadness, happiness, anger, desire, and general
empathy.
In Aristotle’s Poetics, tragedy is defined as an imitation of action “with incidents
arousing pity and fear, where with to accomplish its catharsis or such
emotions.” This exhibition expresses many of these mini-tragedies we encounter
on a daily basis and artists’ attempts to record, recreate, and harness this
energy. The tragedies felt are sometimes so acute and personal; yet extend to
the universal, as profoundly emotional and relatable to a love song, a political
slogan, a break-up letter, or a monument.
Curated by Stephen Collier. Emotional Signs will run through April 3. Gallery
hours are Saturday and Sunday, noon-5pm and by appointment.
